Prolotherapy
What is Prolotherapy?
Prolotherapy is a series of simple injections used to treat chronic musculoskeletal pain. It stimulates the body’s natural healing process to repair damaged and degenerated tissues. New fibrous tissue is created resulting in increased activity level and strengthening of the effected area.
What types of injections are used?
Typically, concentrated sugar water (hypertonic dextrose) is injected.
How often do I need to receive injections?
Depending on your condition, the number of injections can vary; typically they range from 3 to 6 injections spaced several weeks apart.
How do the injections promote natural healing?
Because the solution is highly concentrated, the body will immediately try to dilute the solution. This causes irritation and a slight inflammation of the tissue. Your body will respond by stimulating a natural repair process encouraging growth of new ligament or tendon fibers.
What can I do to minimize any pain I may experience?
While the pain is only temporary, it can be reduced with pain relievers such as Tylenol®. It is important to note that anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin and ibuprofen (including Aleve, Motrin®, steroids, and all prescription NSAIDs) will block the healing process and should not be taken during treatment.
When will I begin to see results?
Typically you will begin to feel improvement immediately, then gradually with each successive injection.
How successful is Prolotherapy?
Most patients that have been treated with Prolotherapy have experienced good to excellent results, with many permanently cured.
How soon can I return to my normal activities?
Many people return to their normal activities the same day.
How do I know if Prolotherapy is right for me?
A consultation with Dr. Francis Unson will determine if Prolotherapy is right for you.
