What is the goal of medical acupuncture?
The main goal of medical acupuncture is to provide clinical improvement in your condition or symptoms through the activation of the body’s natural pain control and healing mechanisms. An important aspect of medical acupuncture is to provide painless stimuli to the spinal cord and brain.
How do I know if medical acupuncture is right for me?
Based on your medical history, condition and other treatments you have received or are currently receiving, Dr. Francis Unson will decide with you if you will benefit from medical acupuncture.
How does medical acupuncture relieve pain?
An aspect of pain is the body’s own perception of pain. This perception can be altered with medical acupuncture. One intervention is to alter the transmission of pain signals throughout the nervous system by utilizing two systems. The first system assists the body in filtering out some of the pain signals by stimulating the nerves that supply the area of injury with needles. At the same time, these needles will cause the body to release special chemicals to help block pain signals at the spinal cord. The second system stimulates the release of the body’s natural pain relief substances.
Can traditional acupuncture compliment medical acupuncture?
Yes, traditional Chinese Medicine emphasizes a holistic approach and can be used in conjunction with medical acupuncture. The basic foundation for oriental medicine is the rebalancing of energy flow, known as Qi (pronounced "chee"). The best approach will be determined for you, whether it be traditional, medical or a combination of both.
How many needles will be used?
Depending on your condition, as little as 3 needles or as many as 15+ needles will be used. These needles will be strategically placed throughout the body.
Will the needles hurt?
Medical acupuncture is virtually painless. The needles used are extremely fine. When these needles enter the tissue, it parts the tissue. In contrast, traditional hypodermic needles cut the tis- sue when entered, which results in the experience of pain. Additionally, blood loss or bleeding is minimal with medical acupuncture.
Will I feel anything at all?
Some may feel a small prick as the needle passes through the skin, others feel nothing at all. There might be a sensation of heaviness, a twitch or slight ache as the needle reaches the intended spot.
When will I begin to see results?
Depending on your condition, you may begin to feel relief immediately.
