Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP)
What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), is a revolutionary, non-surgical treatment that utilizes the body’s own natural healing power to repair damaged tissue. This medical treatment uses a concentration of a patient's own platelets to accelerate the healing of injured tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints. Platelets are rich in growth factors and promotes tissue repair and healing.
What conditions can Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treat?
PRP can treat the following conditions: acute and chronic soft tissue injuries, knee injuries, chronic tennis elbow, osteoarthritis, hamstring strains, chronic rotator cuff injuries, achilles tendonitis and lower back sprains/strains.
How does Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) work?
The procedure involves drawing a small amount of blood from the patient (about the same amount as a standard blood test), and concentrating the platelets in the blood through the use of a centrifuge. The highly concentrated platelets are then injected back into the patient’s damaged tissue using ultrasound guidance if necessary, to begin the healing process.
How often do I need to receive injections?
Typically, 1-2 injections are given every 6-8 weeks apart, and three to six treatments are required.
How long is the procedure?
The entire procedure takes about 40 minutes to an hour (per office visit).
Is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) safe?
PRP uses the patient’s own blood to stimulate the natural healing process within the body so it is very safe and natural. Patients no longer have to endure painful surgeries, which can be complicated and intrusive.
How successful are Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatments?
PRP has a very high success rate and results from PRP treatments are typically permanent. This is because PRP actually repairs damaged tissue, whereas traditional techniques such as icing and cortisone injections treat only for inflammation of the tissue, resulting in temporary pain relief.
Will I experience any pain with Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?
You may experience some soreness after the treatment, however it should only last for a period of a few days.
How do I know if Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is right for me?
A consultation with Dr. Francis Unson will determine if Platelet Rich Plasma is right for you.
